Selecting Personal Home Security Products

You can improve your personal home security in a variety of ways. Today there are a wide variety of options in home security products – not only in differing models from different companies but also in the types of home security product you can find. From single purpose items to full kits for putting together a do it yourself home security system, you can find it all.

Sometimes it seems like the array of choices gets overwhelming so it may be a good idea to think about your home situation and just what your goal is for any personal home security products you buy. A quick look at some of the more common security devices should make your task easier.

First up is one of the old standards: the motion detector floodlight. These are for night time security to illuminate dark areas of your property when the detector senses something moving. Usually these can be adjusted for sensitivity so every stray cat, rabbit or small whatever sets it off.

Motion alert sensors are similar but can be used in various ways both indoors and out. These are passive infra-red sensors which will detect motion in the covered area. They can be connected to either silent or overt alarms. Some can be passworded.

The electronic dog alarm is another easy to use device. Normally a device like this would be set to pick up motion just outside a door. Yes folks, these things can “see” through the door. Most have several sound modes which will include something non-threatening when you are expecting a guest, an angry watch dog mode and an angry watchdog plus siren mode. Some models get louder and the barking becomes more frequent as the intruder gets closer. The only problem that I see with these devices is the need to have them, at least, at all entry doors or to put in additional security equipment.

Of course, these days, you can pick up a kit of home security products that lets you put a simple system together quickly with door and window alarms. Put one of these in to cover windows and the least likely entry door and put your electric watchdog at the door a burglar is most likely to try. Now you’ve got a home security system that should help protect your property at a reasonable price.

If you are willing to spend a bit more and you have a computer to connect the receiver to, you can get tiny wireless video security cameras to add to your setup. These can allow you to monitor either the outside areas of your property or specific rooms or areas within the home.

Even 24 hour monitoring of your security system via the internet can be ridiculously cheap. However, if you are considering this, check the services carefully so you understand exactly what they do and be sure that any equipment you install is compatible and meets the requirements for monitoring.

These are only a few of the many home security products which are available but they are probably the most common and should, in some combination, meet most people’s basic needs. You can spend a great deal of money on really elaborate, top-of-the-line home security equipment, but for most of us that is probably overkill. Sometimes a simpler approach works as well and surely will cost much less.

The Best Value In A Home Security Product

In the close to 10 years we have been writing about home security products, we have come to change our thinking about what represents the best value in them. In this article we will discuss what the best value in security products is and explain why we have changed our mind.

First of all, that industry is close to a $60 billion a year behemoth that grows by leaps and bounds every year, not just because of new homes either; long-time homeowners realize the value of protecting their nearly $250,000 investment-the biggest they have.

And what are they protecting it from? Home burglary continues to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. And it’s not difficult to understand why. It is one of the most lucrative of all crimes, and the chances of getting caught are slim and none and we just saw Slim leaving town about 10 minutes ago. There is only a 5% chance that a burglar will get caught according to police statistics.

A burglar will spend about 10 minutes or less inside a home looking for things of value like cash, credit cards, jewelry and handguns-things that are easily pawned for quick cash. In that time he will take, on average, close to $2,000 worth of goods. Not bad for 10 minutes’ work.

Window alarms are an inexpensive way to protect your home. If properly used they can sound a loud alarm when somebody enters through a window so they represent a very good value also.

I used to believe that the best value in a home security product was a motion detection alarm called the electronic watchdog, a.k.a. the barking dog alarm. It sold for anywhere from $80-$100. It protected an area up to 20 feet away in a 110 degree arc. When someone entered the protected area, the sound of a barking dog started. It was one of the most effective home security alarms available and continues to be one of my favorites.

But recently I have come to my senses and realize that the most effective security product at deterring burglary and therefore the best value for a home security product are fake security cameras.

When a burglar sees a security camera outside of the home, unless he’s got a screw loose, he will move on to another house. He doesn’t want to get caught, and he doesn’t want to have his picture taken. Unless he’s three or four feet away from a fake security camera he cannot tell the difference between that and the real thing.

Home Security Products – The Best Way to Ensure the Security of Your House and Why

In order to make our house more secure we should first identify any potential threats. One of the greatest threats to the security of your house is burglary, also known as home invasion.

House burglaries may occur at any time of the day or night, especially when no one is at home. We all think that if we lock the doors at night that we are safe. And that might be true but let’s talk about the first floor of your house. Do you really check the locks on ALL of your doors at night or when you leave the house? What about your windows – are they all locked?

Hopefully the answer to that question is yes. But is it enough? Can’t someone just silently break your window and unlock it? It’s pretty easy to do, especially for burglars who have the tools and a lot of experience to go with it.

The same for doors – don’t you think that these creeps have ways to getting through the doorway? You better believe it or else there wouldn’t be so many burglaries every year.

Home Security Products are the best way to help make your doors and windows more secure. One way is to attach a Door Alarm or Window Alarm to each area. These items are small, inexpensive and really work. They give off a very loud and annoying sound that will alert everyone in the house that someone is trying to get in to do some harm.

These alarms are also often heard by your nearby neighbors, giving them a chance to call 911 and maybe get a good description of the bad buys as they’re running away.

There are also alarms for your outside. Some of these devices will silently notify you inside your house that people are approaching your front door so that you can call the police before they realize they have been detected.

If, for some reason, you don’t want a Door Alarm but still want door protection, there are many inexpensive but very strong Door Braces which will keep bad guys from getting into your house through the door.

You also need to secure your home from threats posed by toxic substances. This is essentially needed to protect your children as well as your elderly parents or relatives. Ensure that you have a safe cabinet where you can lock all of your household cleaning solutions, insecticides and air fresheners. Most of these chemicals are poisonous and can result in sickness and ultimately death if consumed.

Make sure you have the number of your local poison control center to guide you on what to do in case of a poisoning incident.

There are many other Home Security Products to protect your house and these are just a few suggestions. Obviously there are many more and I hope I have given you a start on thinking of more and putting them into use so you won’t become the victim of an accident or crime statistic.

Home Security Kits – What Home Security Products Should Be Included?

The manufacturers of home security products have realized that in order to better market their products, they should put together “home security kits” that contain several products to serve different functions protecting your home. This is great for consumers because they usually offer a discount on each of the products when bought in a complete kit. What home security products should be included in these home security kits? Below is a list of the products that because of their effectiveness and low price, should always be included.

1) Wireless surveillance camera. You can find quality models of these cameras that are of very high quality, can send a live feed to your computer or cell phone, and are very durable. Since these cameras are wireless, you can move them as often as you want and they are very easy to install.

2) Motion detector lights. These are also very easy to install and can be very effective in deterring potential intruders or burglars. Remember, they love darkness. A quick flash of light can be more than enough to scare them off.

3) Smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm. These two alarms are very important to have in any home. Fires and carbon monoxide poisoning kill many people every year. Getting a warning from these alarms can save your life.

4) Temporary alarms. These are very inexpensive yet very effective in preventing intrusion through the doors or windows. They work by infrared laser and one is attached to the window or door while another is attached to the wall next to it. The laser feed connects the two units and when the window or door is opened, the connection is broken and the alarm sounds.
